A Bad Art Short Story
Underdressed for the occasion, she nervously sits down on the red velvet seat, feeling the sweat running down her face.
She was always the one being rejected, falling short, not quite getting there, being disappointed, but not this time. This time was her time to rise and shine!
In a daze of anxiety, she could barely hear the host on stage, except for those faithful words: “And the award goes to… Cece!”
Her brain barely registering the sound of her own name, but thank goodness her legs knew what to do and where to go. Awkwardly making her way to center stage, all she could hear was the lounder and lounder thumb of her heart.
The host shakes her hand firmly and gives her the award. The award itself, a mug, just a regular mug, but it was the inscription on the mug that made it so special. It was the acknowledgement of her achievements.
Blinded by the lights, she approaches the microphone stand as the crowd grows quiet in anticipation of her speech.
Words, oh sweet words, she had none! Tears running down her face, she simples holds her award above her head in triumphant, shouting, much lounder then expected: “Thank You!”
Back at home, her award is always by her side as a practical mug for hot drinks. However since her past achievement was being a failed traditional artist, and some habits die hard, she keeps washing her digital pen in her coffee, another proof that she is indeed the Worst Digital Artist in the World.
The End
Side note about this short story: Turning despair into creativity, I thought to use my imposter syndrome as inspiration for my art. I hope it doesn’t sound too negative, it was actually a great creative exercise to help me deal with my feelings towards myself and and my perspective on art.
